Number Plate Recognition (NPR) systems use Neural Networks technology, an artificial intelligence method to identify vehicles by their Number plates. This can be especially useful in deterring fuel theft from garage forecourts.

The NPR system can integrate with various I/O devices, such as barrier control systems, using CCTV cameras to capture images of the Number plate. For example, when a vehicle approaches a barrier, the NPR software "reads" the number plate and if validated, signals to the parking barrier to open, keeping a time record on the entry or exit of the car park for automatic payment calculations if required. NPR can be used in parking management, stolen car search, traffic monitoring, etc.
